Hosted by Healthy Campus Alberta and Recovery on Campus Alberta

A student-led webinar highlighting how trained Peer Recovery Navigators provide one-on-one support, facilitate recovery meetings, and reduce stigma across campus. This session will center student voices and lived experience, while sharing practical insights on how peer-based recovery infrastructure increases connection, early help-seeking, and belonging.

Speakers

Amrit Matharoo

Amrit Matharoo (she/her) is a social worker and researcher whose work spans frontline support, systems navigation, and community-based research. She currently serves as a Recovery Support Specialist with the UCalgary Recovery Community (UCRC), where she oversees the Peer Recovery Navigator program and supports students and staff in their recovery journeys. Amrit is also an incoming PhD student in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary. She is deeply committed to creating spaces of belonging and dignity, bringing care, compassion, and lived insight to her work. In her spare time, she enjoys being an auntie to her nieces and nephew, spending time with her dog Mowgli, and crocheting.

Krysia Denys

Krysia Denys has been a member of the UCalgary Recovery Community since its early days, starting as a Coffee Cart volunteer and eventually taking on other tasks both as a Peer Recovery Navigator and Research Assistant at the Recovering in Place Lab. She currently leads Donuts & Discussions as well as the Eating & Body Image Peer Support Meeting. In her spare time, she participates in Polish folk dance and creates collage art. She is graduating this semester from a combined BSc in Psychology (Honours) & Biological Science this year, and heading to the University of Saskatchewan to start an MSc in Clinical Psychology in Fall 2026, with a research focus on addiction recovery.

Alex Lepa

Alex Lepa (they/he) is currently completing their undergraduate degree at the University of Calgary (UoC) taking Gender and Sexuality Studies Honours, with a minor in Religion Studies. He serves as Vice President of Marketing for Eating Disorder Awareness  UCalgary, is in the 15th cohort of Scholars Academy, and works as a Peer Recovery Navigator for the UCalgary Recovery Community. They are looking forward to starting a Masters program in Community Engagement and Social Justice at Wilfrid Laurier University in September. In his free time he enjoys nature, creating art, and travelling to new places.

Hailey Schlachter

Hailey Schlachter is a fourth-year Business student at the University of Calgary and a Peer Recovery Navigator (PRN) with the UCalgary Recovery Community (UCRC). She was first introduced to the UCRC through an entrepreneurial project in one of her classes, which quickly became something much more meaningful. Through her own lived experience, she developed a passion for recovery work—particularly in the area of grief and loss. With the support of the UCRC and training like ASIST, she took initiative in developing a grief and loss program on campus, leading it from initial concept to promotion, facilitation, and ongoing growth. Her goal is to show students that their lived experiences can create meaningful impact and help make campus a more connected and supportive place.
